Whalers were beginning recorded at Cheynes Beach during the 1840s, but it was not until the 1920s that the Westerberg family pioneered commercial fishing from the bay. In the hasty years of European settlement, the area was one of the largest established farming enterprises with a station boasting upwards of 30,00 sheep. The inn became a routine stopping place for mailmen and a watering hole for local settlers and in 1871 the beginning meeting of the Plantagenet Road Board was held there. It closed in 1975 and the orchards began to offer way to high quality vineyards. Since then, the town has become known as the birthplace of the Great Southern Wine Region, Australia's largest, covering a 200km rectangle from east to west and more than 100km from north to south. On a definite day, the Albany Wind Farm, more than 50km away, is easily visible. A number of old buildings remain in the region including the town hall (built 1915) Nyabing War Memorial and the worn school building (built 1912) which is now worn as the town’s Brownie’s hut. In 1910 the land was surveyed into 1,00acre blocks priced at 10 shillings per acre earlier the town site was gazetted in 1912. The arrival of the Vast Southern Railway lines from Perth to Albany in 1889 saws the settlement of the area increase and by 1898 the town had been established and a station built. The opening of the Immense Southern Railway in 1889 attracted further settlers to the area allowing the Woodanilling town site to be gazetted in 1892.
